Packshots explain what a product looks like; lifestyle images show context and use. A useful product image set combines the views customers need without misrepresenting the item.
What is a packshot?
A packshot presents the product clearly, commonly against a simple background. It should make the shape, finish and relevant details easy to inspect. White is frequently used, but the correct specification depends on the website, marketplace and category. Check those rules rather than assuming every listing requires the same treatment.
A packshot is not necessarily completely shadowless. A controlled shadow can describe form, while unwanted reflections or a dirty background can distract from it. Choose the treatment to support accurate presentation.
What lifestyle photographs add
A contextual photograph can show scale, handling, an intended environment or a particular use. Styling should support the item rather than conceal it. Avoid suggesting that props or accessories are included when they are not.
For a campaign, you may need a more expressive concept. Keep those photographs distinct from the factual views customers rely on to assess the product.
Build a repeatable series
Begin with a brief covering products, angles, details, file names and output formats. Clean and label the items before shooting. Test one representative product, agree the look and then work through similar items systematically.
Record camera position, framing and lighting. Inspect colour, labels, focus and reflections as you go. Adapt the setup for different materials instead of forcing glass, metal and fabric through exactly the same lighting.
Finish without changing the product
Agree cropping, background cleanup and retouching. Preserve meaningful texture, shape and colour. A strong creative preset may be inappropriate when the purpose is accurate product comparison.
Ask for an initial sample before approving an entire batch. Keep the final files connected to product identifiers so that they can be used correctly in the shop.
Do small products require a cyclorama?
Not always. A suitable tabletop background may be enough; choose the setup for the object and framing.
